Where there is darkness, light

Studying in a Franciscan school for almost a decade would inevitably introduce me to St. Francis' works, one of which is his ever so popular prayer. The wordplay is so beautiful that it used tenses, antonyms and irony to highlight Catholic values. But my post today isn't about analyzing the literary devices used in the prayer but rather on the song version.

Im sharing this uplifting cover by Sarah McLachlan. Weird enough, I first heard it in the last scene of the season 6 finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
Amen.

I Won't Change You

I'm big fan of Sophie Ellis Bextor. After singing my heart out over her old school hits such as Groovejet and Murder on the Dancefloor, I stumbled upon her 2003 single entitled I Won't Change You.

With witty, "I can relate to" lyrics, a catchy, danceable tune and a quirky, speed-dating video, this Sophie song would be one of my life anthems 'til kingdom come.

Sophie Ellis Bextor

I Won't Change You

Album: Shoot from the Hip

Song info: (3:40) Lyrics and Music by Alexander, Ellis-Bextor, Rowe

I used to change my accent, change my stance

My phone number, the way I dance

Some people change lovers like they change their sheets

But I won't change you honey, you're for keeps

I used to think I had to change the way I am

To feel better, to get a man

But once I stopped trying I fell for you

You fell for me so I'll stay the same for you

(Oh yeah) I know that I'm not perfect baby

(Oh yeah) It's no reason to go crazy

(Oh yeah) Boy you can always count on me

For better or for worse, I will always put you first

Chorus:

Now that I have found you

You've changed my life

Cause you're the one who showed me

I have everything right

We're never gonna differ cause we know it's true

So don't change me and I won't change you

I used to change my style like I changed my mind

I tried to change a tire, but I'm not that way inclined

Tried to change my figure my diet too

I'll still change my underwear if that's OK with you

But after seeing you I know that here is best

(Oh yeah) The world can sometimes make you feel bad

(Oh yeah) But don't forget the things you have

(Oh yeah) Boy you can always count on me

In sickness and in health baby always be yourself

Let's dance, the last dance, tooonniiigghhtttt...

the future's bright, the future's orange.

It’s a very slow Monday afternoon here at the school’s PC lab. (You could tell it’s boring because I’m writing.) Pretty much after a year of being delayed in graduating, I have become bored at school. Maybe its because I have lesser things to do, with all the free time I have in my hands, I just stare blankly at the PC monitor and reflect on what can happen in the near future.

Speaking of the future, I’ve got two freaking months to go before I embark to a new journey to the unknown- the real life. Everyone has it, the fear of trying new stuff. But most of the time, I’m always brave enough to try something new even though deep inside my heart pounds like crazy. Maybe it’s not the fear of doing, but the fear of losing. Moving out to the real world in a sense loses a person’s comfort zone. I’m so accustomed to the four walls of the school that high rise corporate buildings scare me. Not only that but this capitalist structure also has its own “culture” that each newbie but adapt to. I hate adapting, that is why it took four years of my entire life adapting in the Ateneo only to find out that the show is already over. And now, here I am again, lost in the madness of my ending/starting career.
